Each year, more than 800,000 people worldwide die by suicide, and many more attempt suicide. In Vietnam, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), the suicide rate in 2021 was 7.3 per 100,000 people. Although this figure is lower than in some neighboring countries, evidence shows that the rate is increasing. When it comes to saving lives, people often picture surgeons performing an operation or firefighters rescuing someone from a burning building. However, saving a life does not always require medical equipment or professional training. Sometimes, it simply begins with a <strong>sincere conversation<\/strong>.   <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SSVN organizes <strong>mental health first aid workshops<\/strong>, providing knowledge and tools that empower ordinary people to respond with confidence when facing emotional crises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Vietnam, mental health remains a highly sensitive topic, leaving many people to <strong>suffer in silence<\/strong>, unsure of how to seek help or support others. This is the reason why SSVN\u2019s mental health first aid knowledge and skills are so crucial. They enable individuals to recognize signs of crisis, intervene effectively, and<strong> reduce harm before it is too late.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#0893db\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Suicide warning signs<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Early recognition of warning signs can help <strong>prevent suicide<\/strong>. If we pay attention and respond in time, we can <strong>offer support<\/strong> and remind the person in crisis that <strong>they are not alone.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"https:\/\/survivalskills.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/portrait-person-with-mental-disorders-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-22550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/survivalskills.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/portrait-person-with-mental-disorders-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/survivalskills.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/portrait-person-with-mental-disorders-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/survivalskills.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/portrait-person-with-mental-disorders-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/survivalskills.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/portrait-person-with-mental-disorders-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/survivalskills.vn\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/08\/portrait-person-with-mental-disorders-2048x1365.jpg 2048w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Verbal warning signs:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A person with suicidal thoughts may say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI feel like I can\u2019t get out of bed.\u201d<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cMy family would be better off without me.\u201d<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cI\u2019m not sure I can take it anymore.\u201d<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;I don&#8217;t have any other choice.&#8221;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Or even speak directly about wanting to die \u2014<strong> something that must never be taken lightly.<\/strong><br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Behavioral warning signs:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Saving up or collecting medicine<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Depression, irritability, or anger<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Suddenly becoming calm after a long period of sadness<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Giving away cherished keepsakes<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Seeking access to harmful means (medications, knives, ropes, guns, etc.)<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sudden changes in religious beliefs, etc.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#0893db\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Stressful situations that may lead to suicidal thoughts:<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Losing a job or being expelled from school<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Breakup in a relationship or loss of a loved one<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Receiving news of a serious illness<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Facing legal penalties or being imprisoned<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Severe financial difficulties<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Fear of becoming a burden to others<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Returning to alcohol or drug adiction, etc.<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#0893db\" class=\"has-inline-color\">QPR: A suicide prevention first aid tool<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>QPR<\/strong> stands for three simple steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Q &#8211; Question:<\/strong> Ask the person directly if they are thinking about suicide.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>P &#8211; Persuade:<\/strong> Listen and encourage them to seek help.<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>R &#8211; Refer:<\/strong> Connect them to a professional, a hotline, or support services.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>you are not required to be an expert<\/strong> to take these steps, however, if they are carried out at the right moment, they <strong>can save a life<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) \u2014 a first aid technique that anyone can perform to sustain life until medical professionals arrive \u2014 QPR is a form of first aid for mental health crises. It can help a person navigate through a suicidal crisis before they are able to access professional support. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>SSVN believes<\/strong> that <strong>at least one person in every family should be trained in QPR<\/strong>, just as we are encouraged to learn CPR. This life-saving tool is <strong>simple, practical, and backed by scientific evidence.<\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#0893db\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Q \u2013 Question<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Ask <strong>kindly but clearly<\/strong>. In Vietnam, fear of \u201closing honor\u201d often makes people hesitant to talk about their mental health issue. However, research shows that <strong>asking directly about suicidal intentions does not increase risk; on the contrary, it can help reduce anxiety and feelings of isolation.<\/strong>  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Some ways you can say:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cHave you been feeling down lately? To the point of thinking about ending your life?\u201d<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>&#8220;Have you ever wish you could sleep and never wake up?&#8221;<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cYou know, when someone is very sad like you, sometimes they wish they could disappear. I\u2019m wondering if you\u2019ve been feeling that way too?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>For <strong>males of all ages<\/strong>, asking the question <strong>directly<\/strong> is often more effective:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cAre you thinking about suicide?\u201d<br><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#0893db\" class=\"has-inline-color\">P \u2013 Persuade<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal at this step is to <strong>offer hope<\/strong>. Let them know that <strong>help is available and that you are there for them<\/strong>. If possible, try to obtain a <strong>temporary commitment<\/strong> that they will not harm themselves until they receive the necessary support.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>You can say:<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cI really want you to live. I\u2019m here for you. We will get through this together.\u201d<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWould you agree to come with me to seek support?\u201d<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWould you allow me to find someone to help you?\u201d<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cCan you promise me that you won\u2019t do anything harmful until I find someone to help you?\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#0893db\" class=\"has-inline-color\">R \u2013 Refer<\/mark><\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Be proactive to suggest the next step<\/strong>. Many people in crisis often feel <strong>too ashamed or hopeless to seek help on their own<\/strong>. However, if people are unsure of nearby support services, they often call emergency services such as the police or ambulance. This can be harmful, as most emergency responders are not specifically trained in psychological crisis intervention.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are supporting someone with suicidal thoughts, actively create a list of safe local resources:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Mental health counselor<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Clinic or support center<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Peer support group<br><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Trusted elder in the community<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This helps you to respond proactively when someone needs immediate support.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong><mark style=\"background-color:rgba(0, 0, 0, 0);color:#0893db\" class=\"has-inline-color\">Conclusion<\/mark><\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>You don\u2019t need to be a doctor or therapist to help prevent suicide \u2014 all it takes is genuine care.
