When I was 4, while my parents were having dinner, I secretly pluged my finger into an electric socket. The world went dark instantly. It was the decisive actions of my dad pushing me out with a chair, and my mom, a nurse, tended to my severe burnt finger\u2014that pulled me back from the brink. I didn\u2019t know it was first aid then. <\/p>\n\n

For 22 years,this was just my family\u2019s dramatic story until I happened to attend a First Aid Class just to discover why I survived. However, many families were not lucky like mine. There, A high school boy raised his voice, heavy with a grief far too old for him: “If only I had learned CPR two months earlier, my dad would still be alive.”. <\/p>\n

His father’s heart stopped, and for 15 agonizing minutes, the family could only watch, wait, and pray for an ambulance that arrived too late.<\/p>\n\n

At every class, I heard the words \u201cif only\u201d so often that I was determined to erase it from everyone\u2019s vocabulary.<\/p>\n\n

Doing so will require thousands of people looking out for each other. My friends and I formed a social enterprise to raise fund which led me to a pitching event. I stepped into a cold, narrow room. Four angel investors sat behind a long table, stone-faced in black suits. After my presentation, one leaned back, and said: “It has no commercial value. No one gonna show up even if it\u2019s free. Helpers could still be assaulted by families or jailed by the police.” <\/p>\n\n

I stood frozen. They were right; the odds were impossibly stacked. The sensible voice in my head reminded me of my childhood dream of travelling the world for which I had been taking multiple jobs at the same time, eating instant noodles as my regular diet for 10 years. I saved enough to realize my dream if I just don\u2019t lose money for a bad business. <\/p>\n\n

But then, the high school boy\u2019s face flashed into my mind, what he said one year ago could be my own future: “If only I had kickstarted this business, someone I love would still be alive.” <\/p>\n\n

Screw the investors. I walked out of room decided to spend all the saving for my childhood dream, but I found an undeniable peace, knowing that I would never have to say, “if only.” <\/p>\n\n

You may be helping many people every day. You may be a healthcare worker racing against every second to save lives, a devoted teacher nurturing the country\u2019s future generations, or an entrepreneur striving to create more wealth and jobs for society. But there is one thing none of us can do: be by our loved ones\u2019 side 24\/7. <\/p>\n\n

Across Southeast Asia, thousands die each year from preventable causes\u2014accidents, strokes, or disasters like the recent Typhoon and floods. We live in a region full of compassion and resilience\u2014but also, risk. That\u2019s why our work matters. Education, livelihoods, and climate action are vital\u2014but when systems fail, first aid is our last line of defense. It takes ten years to train a doctor but only eight hours to learn how to save a life. <\/p>\n\n

Take Mr. Nghia, a journalist and one of our students. A week after his class, he witnessed a 10 tons truck crashing on a couple on a motorbike. While others froze, he remembered his lesson, he stopped the bleeding and stabilized the victims\u2019 crushed legs. That couple survived and married a year later. Without Nghia, their wedding could be a funeral. <\/p>\n

Two learners – the boy and the journalist, two accidents in the same Ho Chi Minh city, same chaos\u2014only one difference: someone was prepared before the accident happened. Nghia is one of 200,000 learners now saving thousands of lives each year. <\/p>\n\n

Imagine if every family had at least one person trained in first aid\u2014how many thousands more lives could we save together? If you already know first aid, teach it to one more person. If not, join one of Survival Skills Vietnam\u2019s classes and spend at least four hours practicing first aid so we can be ready to help our loved ones when they need it most. <\/p>\n\n

Because none of us knows what will happen today or tomorrow. But if we prepare today, no one will ever have to say, \u201cIf only.\u201d <\/p>\n\n
