Every day, at schools across Vietnam, hundreds of incidents of injury can happen to students: slipping in the restroom, burns while eating at the canteen, collisions on the playground, choking on foreign objects during playing around in classroom, or more serious incidents such as accidents during physical activities or drowning in field trips. These incidents not only impact students’ physical and mental well-being, but also cause deep concern for parents and place immense pressure on teachers and schools.

In fact, most incidents are entirely PREVENTABLE – if hazards are identified in time and addressed early.
That’s why Survival Skills Vietnam (SSVN) developed the SAFER program – a school injury prevention course specifically designed for teachers, caregivers, and school administrators.
What is SAFER?
SAFER is SSVN’s exclusive program designed to help teachers:
✅ Identify potential hazards that could cause accidents in the school environment
✅ Assess risk levels using international methods
✅ Develop appropriate, practical, and effective control measures
✅ Apply the continuous improvement process (Plan – Do – Check – Act)
✅ Promote a culture of “proactive safety” within the school community.
Unlike basic first aid courses that teach you how to respond after an accident occurs, SAFER takes a step further – teaching you how to PREVENT accidents from happening in the first place.
Why do teachers should learn SAFER?
1. Proactive – No longer reacting passively
Instead of only reacting after an accident has occurred, teachers are equipped with a risk assessment mindset, which helps them:
- Identify hazardous areas in classrooms, playgrounds, restrooms, etc.
- Điều chỉnh thói quen tổ chức lớp, sắp xếp vật dụng, hướng dẫn học sinh di chuyển an toàn.
- Suggest improvements to school infrastructure and operational procedures.

“We realized there were many hidden hazards we used to consider ‘normal’.” A participants after attending SAFER course said.
2. Practical – Real-life scenarios drawn directly from your own school environment
The program is specifically designed for the education sector, with content tailored to each educational level (preschool, primary school, secondary school, high school, etc.). Participants will:
- Analyze common accidents occuring in school environment.
- Work in groups to discuss and develop practical solutions for the very school where you are teaching.
3. Concise – Learn in 2 hours, apply for a lifetime
The program lasts just 2 hours and can be flexibly tailored to the school’s needs. It can be delivered through:
- On-site sessions at the school
- Online sessions via Zoom
- Or integrated as an e-learning module for large-scale training if needed.
4. Spread – Inspire collective action within the community
When one teacher changes, a classroom becomes safer. When the entire school participates in SAFER, a culture of safety spreads. It’s where every individual feels responsible and empowered to prevent risks.
What makes SAFER different from typical school safety classes?
| Differences | Typical classes | SAFER |
|---|---|---|
| Object | Warning – behavior control | Recognize – Systematic control |
| Approaching | State the rules and guidelines | Analytical thinking and proactive risk detection. |
| Content | General, theory-based | Specific, practical, and tailored to each education level |
| Format | One-way, lecture | Interactive, scenario analysis, group practice |
| Outcome | Remembering rules | Immediate application to improve the work environment |
