This past weekend, a meaningful event took place at Maison Chance as over 50 students took part in the S.A.F.E.R school injury prevention program, organized by Survival Skills Vietnam (SSVN). The program not only provided essential knowledge and skills for staying safe but also laid the groundwork for fostering a culture of safety within the school community.

Maison Chance is a unique social organization in Vietnam that supports the underprivileged, including people with disabilities, orphans, and street children. It offers an inclusive living environment where individuals learn and grow together like a family. The image of children engaging in activities—learning and playing side by side—is a powerful testament to the compassion and social inclusion that Maison Chance is helping to nurture. Explore the necessary knowledge

The S.A.F.E.R. program provided students with practical knowledge that can be easily applied in everyday life. They were taught how to identify potential dangers in both daily activities and school settings. Through engaging and easy-to-understand lessons, the students not only absorbed theoretical knowledge but were also encouraged to practice on the spot. During the session, they were equipped with essential skills to help protect themselves on a daily basis, including:

  • Identifying Everyday Hazards in Learning and Daily Activities:
Specific situations such as falling down stairs, choking on small objects, or getting burned from contact with hot surfaces are common hidden dangers in school environments. The key lies in being able to recognize these risks beforehand, in order to take effective preventive measures. Students learned how to observe their surroundings, identify potentially dangerous situations, and take steps to protect themselves.
  • Understanding the Causes of Injuries in Children:
The course also emphasized the underlying reasons why injuries are more likely to occur among children. Students were encouraged to ask questions and engage in discussions about specific situations they had personally encountered. This interactive approach helped them gain a clearer understanding of the common mistakes that can lead to risks, and more importantly, how to prevent them.
  • Practicing quick responses in common situations such as falls, choking, burns, and drowning…

SSVN guided the students through the necessary steps to take in emergency situations.

  • Identifying the problem: Assessing the situation and determining the level of danger.
  • Assessing the level of risk: Evaluating the situation and deciding on the appropriate course of action.
  • Finding a solution: Choosing the best option to respond effectively.
  • Timely response: Practicing basic rescue and first aid skills.

Through simulated practice of each scenario, the students gradually built up their confidence in handling real-life emergencies.

Real-life simulation games

To make learning more engaging, the students also took part in various games simulating real-life scenarios. These activities not only helped reinforce their knowledge but also provided lively opportunities to practice essential skills. For example, through group exercises, the students acted out specific situations together and discussed appropriate ways to respond.

These activities helped the students gain a deeper understanding of risk analysis and the potential consequences of accidents in a school environment. The games not only created a fun and lively atmosphere but also stimulated the students’ imagination and creativity.

Why is S.A.F.E.R. important?

Injuries are the leading cause of death among children under 19 in Vietnam. However, with the right knowledge and skills, many of these risks can be prevented early on. S.A.F.E.R. is designed not only as an educational program but also as a community awareness campaign focused on safety and prevention.

Contributing to the creation of a safe environment

At SSVN, we believe that safety doesn’t have to be a distant concept—especially when students, teachers, and parents come together to understand and practice it. The S.A.F.E.R. program not only equips children with essential skills but also helps build a foundation for a culture of safety starting from the classroom. Once students understand risks clearly, they become more proactive in protecting themselves and encouraging their peers to stay safe together.

We are incredibly proud of what has been achieved through the S.A.F.E.R. program and the enthusiastic participation of the students at Maison Chance. If you’re a parent, teacher, or school representative interested in bringing the S.A.F.E.R. program to your school, don’t hesitate to reach out to us!

Together, we can build safer, stronger, and more caring schools.
