Survival Skills Vietnam and GARAMIN (Gerakan Advokasi Transformasi Disabilitas untuk Inklusi) NTT. Garamin is an organisasion that that focusing on advocacy and movement for disability transformation to support inclusive community. The collaboration have started a series of activities within the First Aid Training Support Program for people with disabilities and their caregivers in the province of Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT) of Indonesia.

People with disabilities often have difficulty protecting themselves from the risks of accidents and injuries from the surrounding environment and have difficulty accessing support from relatives and medical services when an unfortunate incident occurs. On the other hand, the awareness of safety and first aid of people in many ASEAN countries in general and relatives and caregivers of people with disabilities in particular is still limited, so their initial support is often delayed or incorrect, making pain and injuries worse. This is a common problem and has many consequences for people with disabilities but has not received much attention in the world.

The first aid training program for people with disabilities and their caregivers in Nusa Tenggara Timur (Indonesia) began with a discussion on the situation and how to handle some common injuries that occur to people with disabilities. GARAMIN NTT staff actively and openly discussed the problems and difficulties that are very specific to people with disabilities in the NTT area when facing emergencies, but there is almost no support or educational programs designed in a practical and appropriate way for them. At the same time, officers of GARAMIN NTT was also instructed to use the SSVN E-learning system to share first aid knowleddge to the community of people with disabilities in the NTT province. Following the event, GARAMIN NTT staff will continue to study more deeply through the online Basic First Aid program in Indonesian through the SSVN E-learning system.

GARAMIN, which stands for the Movement for the Inclusion of People with Disabilities in Nusa Tenggara Timur (NTT), has a dream of building solidarity with the spirit of inclusion to fight for equal rights for people with disabilities in all aspects of life in NTT province. Even just started for four years, GARAMIN’s founders has more than 12 years of experience in activities to raise awareness of people with disabilities to exercise their rights in various areas of life, to help people with disabilities escape all forms of discrimination and other forms of injustice.

After learning about the experiences of training first aid skills for people with disabilities and caregivers of SSVN Survival Skills, GARAMIN leaders also realized that this is also an issue that has received little attention in Indonesia and poses many great health risks for people with disabilities, especially in rural areas on islands where access to emergency medical care services is difficult. At the same time, accessing useful knowledge through online learning at the SSVN E-learning system also helps people with disabilities overcome difficulties due to geographical conditions. Therefore, both organizations have cooperated for 4 months to localize the content and experiences that SSVN has implemented in Vietnam and Australia to better suit the culture and conditions of Indonesia.

The program is part of the campaign on Emergency Care for People with Disabilities and International Cooperation to bring the content and technology developed by Survival Skills Vietnam to serve disadvantaged communities in the ASEAN region with the goal of contributing to enhancing understanding, solidarity and friendship within the region.
